Anderton Wall

Last Updated: April 16, 2025

Project Description:

The City is moving forward with the demolition of the Anderton Arms, Cona Hostel and The Bridge buildings in spring/summer of 2025. The removal of these buildings is the first step in the Anderton Dike Remediation Project - which includes the removal of the failing retaining wall that is currently in place and a naturalization of the shoreline.

This is an exciting next step in improvements for the CIty of Courtenay's riverfront.

Project Updates:

  • A tender for the demolition work is now out and expected to close later in April.
  • The work will take place this spring/summer, and will require some road closures near each building.
  • The work is expected to be completed this summer – schedule will be confirmed once the contract is awarded.

Construction Notices:

Specifics about schedule and traffic impacts are to be confirmed - but to complete the demolition work safely, it’s expected that crews will implement closures on Anderton Avenue (in front of the Bridge Lounge, and alongside the Cona Hostel and Anderton Arms).

What you need to know:

  • Demolition work will not impact Canada Day celebrations – requirements are in place to ensure work is not active during this busy time in the neighbourhood.
  • Access to the Florence Filberg Centre will be maintained.
  • Access for transit and emergency service vehicles will be maintained from the 5th Street Bridge onto Anderton Avenue.
  • Garbage collection will not be disrupted.

Recent timeline:

  • March 2025: The City is preparing to deolish three buildings near the 5th Street bridge - the Anderton Arms apartment, former Cona Hostel and former Bridge Loung. A tender is expected to be awarded in April, with work to be complete in spring/summer of 2025.
  • January 2025: With tenant relocation complete, plans are underway for the demolition of the Anderton Arms building, and the former Cona Hostel building, in 2025.
  • October 2024: Acquisition of the former Cona Hostel (440 Anderton Ave) is completed.
  • August-December 2024: Residents of the Anderton Arms building relocate. Support from the M’akola Housing Society for the relocation process is made available by the City and tenants are compensated based on length of tenancy.
  • July 2024: The City acquires the Anderton Arms Building (426 Anderton Avenue) to address the safety risk created by the failing wall.
  • December 2023: The City notifies residents and community about the Risk of Failure for the sheet pile section of the Anderton Wall.
