The Anderton Avenue Retaining Wall is showing signs of movement and is at risk of partial or total failure. To mitigate the risk, the City is making plans to remove the wall and remediate the shoreline following the demolition of two buildings (Anderton Arms and former Cona Hostel) .
Current Status:
(Jan. 2025) The City of Courtenay is making plans to demolish/deconstruct the two buildings at 440 and 426 Anderton Avenue. The demolition is a preliminary step to removing the Anderton Avenue Retaining Wall, and is expected to be completed in 2025.
With both properties vacant, the City bylaw team is monitoring the buildings and temporary construction fencing is in place.

Recent timeline:
- January 2025: With tenant relocation complete, plans are underway for the demolition of the Anderton Arms building, and the former Cona Hostel building, in 2025.
- October 2024: Acquisition of the former Cona Hostel (440 Anderton Ave) is completed.
- August-December 2024: Residents of the Anderton Arms building relocate. Support from the M’akola Housing Society for the relocation process is made available by the City and tenants are compensated based on length of tenancy.
- July 2024: The City acquires the Anderton Arms Building (426 Anderton Avenue) to address the safety risk created by the failing wall.
- December 2023: The City notifies residents and community about the Risk of Failure for the sheet pile section of the Anderton Wall.
