Description:

The City of Courtenay invites written applications for a casual (on-call) clerical support at the City of Courtenay.  This is a union position and is subject to the terms and conditions outlined in the current collective agreement between the City and CUPE Local 556.

This position is a flexible way for incumbents to gain experience and exposure to several diverse and interesting work areas at the City of Courtenay.  Casual assignments provide coverage for vacation, illness, other absences and special projects.  Assignments will vary in length but are typically on an on-call basis.

Members of the Casual Clerical pool provide casual administrative support for City Departments.  This position will provide basic administrative clerical support that may include varied reception, telephone and cashier duties; as well as filing, record keeping and routine communications.  Successful candidates have the ability to adapt to new work assignments and responsibilities quickly.

The Successful Candidate Will Have: 

  • 1-year administrative office/business technology certificate or related discipline from a recognized educational institution, OR equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Criminal Record Clearance
  • sound (2-3 years) administrative experience in reception, telephone and cash handling
  • thorough knowledge of various office equipment and office computer software programs
  • working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures
  • some knowledge in basic bookkeeping principles and practices
  • proficient with the Microsoft suite (Outlook, SharePoint, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • strong writing skills with working knowledge of business English, spelling and punctuation
  • strong customer service, interpersonal, organizational, communication, time management, computer and keyboarding skills
  • ability to accurately process and reconcile cash
  • ability to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner
  • ability to maintain minor clerical records, to compile non-complex statistical data and to perform incidental word processing tasks related to the work
  • ability to work well as a member of a team and independently
  • ability to multi-task and cope effectively with deadlines

This is a casual, on-call position involving shifts during regular business hours (7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), Monday to Friday.  The wage rate is $29.35 per hour; an additional 12.4% of gross wages is paid in lieu of vacation, statutory holidays and benefits.
