Operational Services

The Operational Services department manages and maintains essential City infrastructure. This includes:

  • water distribution
  • storm and waste water collection
  • lift stations and force mains
  • manholes
  • roads, curbs and sidewalks
  • traffic signals and street lighting
  • parks, green space and related facilities
  • Courtenay Civic Cemetery

The department is also responsible for the City’s fleet of vehicles and equipment.

Water, sewer and infrastructure support

If you're having a problem with your water or sewer system and you don't know the cause, contact us first. We can help determine whether the issue is on City infrastructure, which would be our responsibility to repair, or on private property, in which case you would need to contact a plumber.

Maintenance tips and reporting issues

  • Cloudy water? Run your tap for 15 minutes to help clear it.
  • Grass boulevards: Property owners must maintain the boulevard in front of or next to their residence. The City takes care of boulevard trees.
  • Catch basins: Keep catch basins around your home clear to help prevent flooding.
  • Street lights: Report street light outages to Operational Services. Note whether the light is on a metal pole (City-maintained) or a wooden pole (BC Hydro-maintained). You can submit a street light outage online using the Service Request form.
  • Dangerous trees: If a tree is on public property, the City will maintain it. If it’s on private property, refer to the tree management page for more information.
