The City of Courtenay invites written applications for a casual (on-call) Preschool Assistant in the Recreation, Cultural and Community Services Department of the City of Courtenay. This is a union position subject to the terms and conditions of the current collective agreement between the City and CUPE Local 556.
Primary responsibilities include planning and facilitating programs activities in a licensed preschool setting; assisting in the monitoring of work of preschool support workers; and providing input and suggestions on lesson plans and outdoor activities.
Minimum qualifications include:
- Grade 12 or equivalency
- Early Childhood Education Certificate from a recognized educational institution
- current Child Safe or Safety Oriented First Aid-Emergency Level-Childcare and CPR-C
- current Criminal Record Clearance
- eligible for Early Childhood Educators of BC membership
- some (1 year) experience in preschool teaching
- sound knowledge of the Child Care Licensing Act
- strong interpersonal and communication skills
- leadership skills and abilities to provide and promote positive values and early childhood development
- ability to deal tactfully with sensitive issues concerning children
- ability to work well as a member of a team
- physical ability to frequently lift preschool children and equipment such as tables and chairs
This is a casual, on-call position involving shifts during regular business hours. The current hourly wage rate is $21.58/hr. An additional 12.4% of gross wages is paid in lieu of vacation, statutory holidays and benefits.
