Description:

The City of Courtenay invites applications for a full-timeposition of "Community Youth Development Supervisor” in the Recreation, Culture and Community Services Department. This is a union position subject to the terms and conditions in the collective agreement between the City and CUPE Local 556.

Reporting to the Manager of Recreation Programming, the Community Youth Development Supervisor is responsible for the provision of community-based youth services and programs and active engagement with youth ages 11 and over in the delivery, development, and enhancement of programs and services, including but not limited to the provision of youth drop-in services at the LINC Youth Centre.

This position is responsible for building relationships with youth serving community organizations to collectively identify community youth needs, gaps in services, and assist with creating solutions through the engagement of youth, creation of partnerships, community collaboration, and applying for grants which would support opportunities for youth. The position prepares marketing materials; develops and maintains positive relations with community groups and partners; supervises Youth Workers, assists in preparing and maintaining budgets; collaborates with the recreation programming team for the provision of recreation services as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Diploma or Degree in Child or Youth Care, Social Work, or Community Development from a recognized educational institution, or equivalent education and experience;
  • Valid Class 4 Driver’s License;
  • Current Criminal Record Clearance – Vulnerable sector check;
  • Current Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C & AED;
  • Considerable (5 years) experience in the development and delivery of community youth development programs and services;
  • Some supervisory experience;
  • Considerable knowledge and demonstrated skills in child and youth development principles, especially as it relates to service provision in public recreation and community services;
  • Considerable knowledge regarding youth who are at increased risk of being vulnerable due to mental health, addictions or becoming unhoused, or due to other barriers faced in their lives;
  • Considerable knowledge of harm reduction principles, techniques and how to incorporate into youth services;
  • Considerable knowledge of community development frameworks;
  • Knowledge of community resources and agencies in the field of youth development;
  • Demonstrated skill and ability to engage effectively and appropriately with youth ages 11 and over through relationship development, clear boundaries, and mutual respect;
  • Proven skill and ability in establishing and maintaining effective partnerships and community relationship;
  • Ability to work with and provide support to local authorities, public offices, social service agencies, voluntary sector, organizations / community groups and volunteers;
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, time-management, conflict resolution and problem-solving skills;
  • Good computer skills;
  • Leadership skills and ability to provide and promote positive values and social benefits of inclusion;
  • Ability to work variety of shifts, including days, afternoon, evenings, weekday and weekends as required for operational requirements;
  • Ability to provide physical ability to frequently lift heavy objects such as tables and equipment;
  • Knowledge of the Child, Family, and Community Services Act, specifically as it relates to child protection and duty to report requirements.

 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AFTER HIRING:

  • Trauma Informed Practice;
  • ASSIST Certificate;
  • Naloxone training;
  • Valid or willing to obtain BC Class 4 Drivers License;
  • Food Safe Certificate.

The current hourly wage rate is $37.09 based on a 35-hour work week.
