Description:

The City of Courtenay invites applications for a temporary full-timeposition of "Department Clerk – Development Services”. This is a full-time, union position subject to the terms and conditions in the collective agreement between the City and CUPE Local 556.

The Department Clerk – Development Services responds to public inquiries regarding building inspection and business license services; performs administrative, reception and clerical duties for the Building Division and provides support for the Planning and Development Engineering Division as required; receives, reviews and processes applications and issues building permits and business licenses; assists in the development and maintenance of the department’s record management system; maintains related departmental filing systems and statistical reports as required; receives, processes, or issues invoices for various fees and applies pertinent accounting codes; prepares or assists in preparing public and statutory notices and advertisements and other external communication; schedules inspections and works collaboratively with other areas within the City, such as Bylaw Enforcement, Planning, Development and Finance; and performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • 1-year Business Technology Certificate or related discipline from a recognized educational institution, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Criminal Record Check
  • considerable (5 years) reception, administrative and clerical experience
  • thorough knowledge and skill using various office equipment and office computer software programs
  • some knowledge of construction industry and associated building legislation
  • strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, time-management, computer and keyboarding skills
  • ability to read and have a general understanding of technical and legal documents and government regulations
  • ability to deal with public, contractors, developers, consultants, engineers, etc. in sensitive or confrontational situations with courtesy, tact, diplomacy and a high level of professionalism
  • ability to work well as a member of a team and independently
  • ability to multi-task and cope effectively with deadlines in a fast paced and demanding environment

The current hourly wage rate is $33.94.  This is a temporary full-time position anticipated to be 18 to 22 months or upon the return of the incumbent; start date to be determined.
