The City of Courtenay invites applications for a full-timeposition of "Planner 1” in the Development Services Department. This is a full-time, union position subject to the terms and conditions in the collective agreement between the City and CUPE Local 556.
Reporting to the Manager of Development Planning, the Planner 1 performs a variety of planning activities to facilitate effective land use planning in the City of Courtenay. Key activities, such as review, assess and coordinated assigned development applications to ensure compliance with appropriate regulations and legislation; conduct site visits and evaluations; respond to planning enquiries and provide information on departmental policies and procedures; write reports to Council on with respect to development application, land use bylaws and policies, and assisting in coordinating public consultation.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Masters degree in land use planning from an accredited Planning School with equivalent work experience in urban planning or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Required at least two (2) years of related work experience in the development review process, particularly at the municipal level, from initial enquiry through to application.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Office, Excel and PowerPoint
- Ability to work well as a part of a team and independently
- Experience working in a municipal environment is considered an asset
- Membership or eligibility for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Planning Institute of BC
- Preference given to Registered Professional Planners (MCIP,RPP)
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License
- Criminal Record Check
- Considerable knowledge of the practices, principles, techniques and methods applicable to urban planning operations
- Considerable knowledge of the rules, regulations, policies, bylaws, objectives, and legislation governing the operations of a Development Services Division
- Knowledge of land economics, environmental, cultural and social considerations in the evaluation of development proposals
- Sound experience of analytical and research techniques/methodology and of the current trends and developments in municipal planning
- Ability to exercise consistent judgement and creativity in dealing with a variety of planning matters
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with internal/external contacts and other related agencies
The current hourly wage rate is $42.07 based on a 35-hour work week. This is a full-time position.
