Courtenay Needs Volunteers for Centennial Committee

The City of Courtenay needs help planning its biggest-ever birthday. The City turns 100 in 2015, and they’re looking for volunteers to plan a worthy celebration. Community members are being invited to apply to sit on a new Centennial Celebration Committee.

Courtenay Mayor Larry Jangula said the committee will play a key role in planning and organizing events. “We’re looking for people from across the community to help with our centennial,” he noted. “We’ve come a long way in 100 years. Anyone who would like to help honour and celebrate our history is encouraged to put their name forward.”

Committee members would meet at least once a month, and would help implement all aspects of the centennial celebration. The time commitment would likely increase as the centennial and related events draw closer.

Those interested should summarize their previous volunteer and/or work experience, and send their submission to the City of Courtenay community services department by July 31, 2013. Hard copies can be mailed or hand delivered to City Hall at 830 Cliffe Avenue, Courtenay. Email submissions can be sent to communityservices@courtenay.ca

Jangula noted the high calibre of volunteers in the Comox Valley. “There have been some amazing events here over the years, such as the BC Seniors Games, Special Olympics, the Olympic Torch Relay, you name it,” he said. “Our local volunteers have done fantastic things for our community. We’d like to tap into some of that energy and creativity to help us figure out the best ways to celebrate this centennial.”
