Funding Application Extension Granted for Fitzgerald Bike Lanes

The Province of B.C. has granted an extension on the funding application deadline for the Fitzgerald Avenue road improvement project. The Cycling Infrastructure Partnership Program (CIPP) could provide up to 50 percent of eligible costs on the $60,000 project.

As announced earlier in December, the City of Courtenay has postponed the planned improvements until spring 2014. The project will include bicycle lanes on either side of Fitzgerald Avenue, new signage, and improved sightlines. The project was originally scheduled to be completed in November 2013, however cold and rainy weather conditions put the project on hold.

The City will now have until May 1, 2014 to complete the project and submit their CIPP funding application.

“We’re very grateful that the Province has granted this extension,” said Lesley Hatch, the City’s senior manager of engineering. “We’re looking forward to completing this project as soon as possible in the spring.”

Courtenay will also be applying to ICBC for additional funding through their Road Safety Department.
