Courtenay Deploys Aqua Dam Technology for Flood Concerns
December 3, 2015
Update: Thursday December 3, 2:00 pm
The City received notice this morning of potential for flooding due to unexpected storm surges, high sustained winds and heavy rainfall. Over the next few days these conditions combined with high tides may present a continuing flood concern.
As a cautionary measure, the City is deploying new Aqua Dam (temporary water filled barriers) technology on the Old Island Highway between Ryan Road and Headquarters Road and Comox Road between Old Island Highway and Highway 19a bypass near the Courtenay Slough in anticipation of severe weather. It is anticipated Aqua Dam will be in place for the next several days.
Traffic Closures:
As the city installs and deploys the Aqua Dams there will be traffic closures. The south bound lane between Old Island Highway and Highway 19a bypass near the Courtenay Slough will be closed immediately and will remain closed for as long as the Aqua Dams are deployed. The Old Island Highway between Ryan Road and Headquarters Road will be closed while the Aqua Dam is installed and then re-opened to two lanes of traffic.
The City will provide more details as they become available.
