Sidewalk Trip Hazard Repairs in Courtenay

Another round of city-wide sidewalk repairs is happening in the City of Courtenay this month.

The project will improve mobility, safety, walking comfort, and aesthetics on sidewalks throughout the city.

This is the second major round of sidewalk repairs in Courtenay. The first round in late 2017 addressed nearly 70 sidewalk defects, primarily in West Courtenay.

This year, the City will be repairing over 250 sidewalk defects. Priority has been assigned to trip hazards with over .5 inch (1.25 cm) vertical displacement.

Safesidewalks Canada has been contracted to complete these repairs, with work planned from Monday July 9 to Wednesday July 18, weather permitting.  

Courtenay commissioned a condition assessment for all Courtenay sidewalks last year, totalling 164 kilometres. The project catalogued any sidewalk defects and prioritized those most in need of repair, as well as noting any other future maintenance and inspection requirements.

The project is part of the City of Courtenay’s overall Asset Management efforts, providing cost-effective solutions to maintaining and renewing infrastructure.

There will be noise generated by the crew and equipment, and sidewalk access may be restricted during construction. The City regrets any inconvenience caused by this infrastructure project.
