Courtenay Providing Space for Christmas Hamper Program

The City of Courtenay is providing temporary storage and work space this December for the “Sharing the Christmas Spirit” Hamper Program. The non-profit registered charity provides Christmas hampers to approximately 400-600 families in the Comox Valley each year.

The organization will be using the Conference Hall at the Florence Filberg Centre for the month of December to store and organize hampers, and as a home base for hamper distribution.

Courtenay Mayor Bob Wells said the arrangement is a good fit for both parties. “This year the hamper program was looking for a warehouse-type facility to accommodate physical distancing,” said Wells. “The City can’t typically offer space of this nature as our facilities are heavily booked throughout the year. Right now, with fewer programs and seasonal gatherings due to COVID-19, we are in a unique position where we can offer the large and secure space the hamper program needs for their operations. We’re happy we could step up to help them out this year.”

The Hamper Program will provide their own insurance, with operations performed by a team of volunteers and materials supplied by donations.
