Automated Curbside Collection Carts Rolling Out to Courtenay and Comox in 2024

The City of Courtenay and the Town of Comox are collaborating on a new automated residential collection service launching in January 2024 for residents receiving curbside collection service.

The new automated collection service will use specially designed, easy-to-roll carts with lids. The new collection trucks will have mechanical arms operated by the driver inside the truck's cab. The arms will grab, lift and empty the materials in the carts, and then return the carts to the curb.

The City and Town will distribute three new wheeled carts to each eligible household before the automated service starts – one cart for each material, for bi-weekly recycling and garbage, and weekly organics (food and yard waste).

The upcoming shift to automated collection follows a competitive bid process that the City and Town undertook in the summer of 2022. Halton Environmental (operating as Emterra Environmental) was awarded the contract to provide three-stream automated curbside collection over a 10-year term.

Comox and Courtenay are working together with a shared goal of making the transition to automated curbside collection as easy as possible.
