7:30-8:30 p.m.
A recording of the presentation will be posted after the session at www.courtenay.ca/floodready.

An online survey will open after the information session to gather feedback on the recommended flood risk mitigation strategies at www.courtenay.ca/floodready, available until Friday, July 14th.

An initial public survey in May gathered 97 responses, with feedback and priorities for addressing flood risk in Courtenay.

  • Over 75% of survey participants were familiar with impacts from sea level rise and climate change.
  • Survey participants were most concerned about flood impacts to homes, properties and infrastructure.
  • Survey participants identified infrastructure and the environment as key areas of concern for the future.
  • There were a wide range of responses imagining a more flood resilient future for Courtenay. Survey participants shared that it’s important to preserve and restore the environment, public access to the shoreline and rivers, and the health of the estuary. They also identified ways of thinking differently about future development in the floodplain and emphasized maintaining safety and accessibility for future generations.

The City of Courtenay is considering a broad range of strategies to adapt to flooding now and in the future. These options could include relocating buildings and critical infrastructure, upgrading existing infrastructure, directing development to higher ground, and helping build resilience of those located in the flood hazard area.
