Trail Connection Improvements Underway for Dingwall Steps
August 31, 2023
Set up for construction has begun on a pathway project that will improve connectivity for people who walk and bike in and around East Courtenay.
The Dingwall Steps will create a formal trail connection from Dingwall Road to Carmanah Drive and beyond – filling a gap in the trail network for pedestrians and cyclists travelling to and from North Island College, Queneesh Elementary School, North Island Hospital – Comox Valley, transit connections, and the commercial centre at Ryan and Lerwick Road. The top of the trail will provide a scenic viewpoint overlooking Courtenay and the Comox Glacier.
The project will include:
- Structural steel and concrete steps
- Rest areas
- Benches and railing
- Asphalt pavement connecting to the trail network
- Bike channel to walk bikes up and downhill
- Lighting
- Trees
- Landscaping
Construction is expected to begin in September and be completed by the end of 2023. The project area between Dingwall and Carmanah Drive will remain closed to pedestrians until construction is complete. During construction, single-lane alternating traffic may take place on Dingwall Road/Cruickshank Avenue. Edgett Excavating Ltd. is the prime contractor performing construction on behalf of the City.
