In Remembrance of Doris Weislein

August 14, 2024

Flags at City of Courtenay facilities are flying at half-mast in honour and remembrance of Elder Doris Weislein, following her passing over the weekend.

Weislin was a major contributor on countless community initiatives. She was the founder and president of the Indigenous Women's Sharing Society, and was one of the founders of the Upper Island Women of Native Ancestry and the Wachiay Friendship Centre.

Her efforts focused on building community connections, especially programs that support women and children in the Comox Valley, including the Aboriginal Head Start Program, Coats for Kids and the Drop-In Child Care Centre, and many more.

In recognition of her many contributions to our community, in 2009 the City awarded Weislein with the “Freedom of the City,” our highest honour.

City Council and staff extend condolences to her loved ones and colleagues, with gratitude for Weislein’s life and her decades of service to support and improve the lives of others.
