September 20, 2024

Update: Overnight paving has been rescheduled and will take place Thursday, October 10, to Friday, October 11, 2024, between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Transportation upgrades are coming to 5th Street. The City of Courtenay will be repaving the eastbound and westbound lanes of the 5th Street hill approach to the bridge as well as the intersection at 5th Street and Cliffe Avenue.

Construction will occur overnight to limit disruption to traffic.

Construction will occur overnight to limit disruption to traffic. Work is expected to begin on Thursday, October 10, to Friday, October 11, 2024, between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., weather permitting. Please be advised the Old Island Highway between Comox Road and Puntledge Road will also be closed overnight for sewer main installation.

During construction hours, the 5th Street bridge, 5th Street from the bridge to Cliffe Avenue, and the intersection at 5th Street and Cliffe Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic. Available detours will be via Ryan Road and the 17th Street Bridge or Condensory Bridge. Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to use the sidewalks, however rerouting through the Native Sons/Florence Filberg Centre parking lot is encouraged.

Traffic control personnel will be on site to assist pedestrians, and cyclists through the work zone.

This project is part of the City’s Pedestrian, Cycling, and Pavement Renewal (PCPR) capital program. The 5th Street hill is one of the most heavily travelled routes in Courtenay; the project will improve the strength of the driving surface by adding aramid fibers (a fiber containing enhanced structural properties and strength) to the new asphalt, addressing the rutting from the aging asphalt.

For any questions regarding this project, residents are asked to please contact Operational Services, City of Courtenay, at (250) 338-1525 or operations@courtenay.ca.
