Speculation and Vacancy Tax Expanded to Include Courtenay

February 3, 2025

The Province of British Columbia has expanded the Speculation and Vacancy Tax to include the City of Courtenay starting in the 2024 tax year. This expansion is part of the provincial government’s ongoing efforts to increase housing availability and affordability by discouraging property speculation and vacant homes.

The provincial government is sending official notifications to property owners by mail, with details on how to complete the declaration and whether they qualify for an exemption.

Property owners in Courtenay will need to declare their property status by March 31, 2025.
