Activity Leader - Evenings/Weekends

The City of Courtenay invites applications for the positions of "Activity Leaders - Evenings/Weekends” in the Recreation, Culture & Community Services Department.  This is a non-union, casual position that will include evening and weekend shifts, in weekly pre-registered or drop-in programs. 

Activity Leaders are responsible for the planning and facilitation of programs for children and youth and/or youth and adults with diverse abilities.  Programs may include: birthdays, leadership, cooking/baking, arts & crafts, sports/fitness, special events (e.g. Haunted House, seasonal dances, Children’s Christmas Party) and more and consist both a variety of indoor and outdoor activities. 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

• Activity Leader 3
  • Diploma/degree or currently enrolled in post-secondary education or equivalent education and experience
  • Activity Leader 2
    • Completion of grade 11 or equivalent
    • Activity Leader 1
      • Completion of grade 9 or equivalent
      • High 5 Principles of Healthy Childhood Development (or willing to obtain)
      • Food Safe (willing to obtain)
      • Responsible Adult (or willing to obtain)
      • NCCP (or willing to obtain)
      • Valid Class 4 driver’s license preferred (Activity Leader 3)

Occupational Certificates, Licenses, Association Memberships:

·         Current Criminal Records Clearance with vulnerable sector check

·         Current First Aid and CPR Level C (or willing to obtain)

Experience:

• Experience leading games, songs, art, crafts, drama and other recreational or leisure activities
• Experience with children ages 3-18
• Experience working with persons with diverse abilities

• Experience instructing and/or assisting in the instruction of sports programs in a competitive and/or recreation environment

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Have a strong commitment to professionalism
• Possess passion and enthusiasm for participants and a willingness to learn
• Ability to lift 50lbs
• Ability to participate in active recreation programming
• Ability to lead, coach and mentor volunteers & other staff
• Ability to delegate tasks and responsibility to team members and volunteers

• Ability to build healthy relationships with participants and promote positive values and recreational benefits
