Single-use items
The Government of Canada’s Single-use Plastics Prohibition Regulations came into effect on December 20, 2022. The first stage is the prohibition of the manufacture and import for sale of problematic plastics, as defined by the regulations.
This is part of Canada’s plan to achieve zero plastic waste by 2030 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Plastics targeted by the regulations:
- Checkout bags: Bags provided at retail stores to carry purchased goods.
- Cutlery: Includes knives, forks, spoons, sporks and chopsticks.
- Foodservice ware: Items designed to serve or transport food or beverages (e.g. takeout containers).
- Ring carriers: Flexible holders for beverage containers.
- Stir sticks: Used to stir beverages or prevent of spills from the lid.
- Straws: Includes straight and flexible straws. Flexible straws have exceptions under the regulations.
