Comox Road Sewer Project

Start: June 2024

End: Spring 2025

Last Updated: December 20, 2024

Project Description:

The City is delivering a sewer project that will protect the Courtenay River and estuary by decommissioning an aging sewer pipe that crosses the Courtenay River. To do so, sewage from properties in the areas around Lewis and Simms Parks will be rerouted to a new pipe along Comox Road to the Courtenay Pump Station.

Current Notices

  • Timing Update: The Comox Road Sewer Project has been paused for the winter, with the final stage of construction (in Lewis and Simms Parks) to be completed in Spring 2025. Delays due to unforeseen ground conditions over the summer extended the construction schedule. As a result, the next step of the project – construction within the two parks – has been postponed due to wet conditions. Watch here and on the City’s Facebook page for updates about restart in the New Year.
  • Comox Road and Island Highway Work Complete: The portions of the sewer project along Comox Road and Old Island Highway (near Lewis Centre) are now complete. There may be minor cleaning or remediation works but no further disruptions are expected through these areas.

About the Project:

  • The work will occur on Comox Road (between Hwy 19A bypass and Old Island Hwy/5th Street), and around Lewis and Simms Parks and the Lewis Centre.
  • Construction started on Comox Road and Old Island Highway in June 2024 and was completed in November 2024. Work in Lewis and Simms parks will be completed in 2025.
  • Work in/around the parks will begin in spring 2025.
  • Edgett Excavating Ltd. is the project contractor.
