Comox Road Sewer Project

Project Description:
The City is launching a sewer project that will protect the Courtenay River and estuary by decommissioning an aging sewer pipe that crosses the Courtenay River. To do so, sewage from properties in the areas around Lewis and Simms Parks will be rerouted to a new pipe along Comox Road to the Courtenay Pump Station.
Current Notices:
- Comox Road Paving (Nov. 4-15): Crews are preparing Comox Road for re-paving and expect to complete the work between Nov. 4-15, with the schedule to be confirmed depending on weather. There will be road closures and disruptions to business access - please allow extra time if accessing the area.
About the Project:
- The work will occur on Comox Road (between Hwy 19A bypass and Old Island Hwy/5th Street), and around Lewis and Simms Parks and the Lewis Centre.
- Construction will start in June 2024 and is expected to be completed in November 2024.
- Roadway work will be completed in summer, with Old Island Hwy and Hwy 19A bypass construction scheduled for nights.
- Work in/around the parks will begin in fall, after summer programming is completed.
- Single lane alternating traffic will be in place for an extended period on Comox Road.
- Edgett Excavating Ltd. is the project contractor.

What’s Happening Now:
- Connection completed at Hwy 19A Bypass.
- Pipe installation on Comox Road complete. Repaving to occur in early November.
- Pipe installation on Old Island Highway complete and road re-paved.
- Work to begin in Lewis Park in November.
- Edgett Excavating Ltd. was awarded the contract in May 2024.
Cost and Funding:
The total construction costs are $2.7M to be funded from a combination of long-term borrowing and reserves.
