Tax exemption

Not-for-profit organizations in the City of Courtenay may qualify for a permissive property tax exemption. 

The exemption amount varies. If approved, an organization may receive a full or partial tax exemption. 

Eligibility

To be considered, organizations must meet the criteria outlined in the Permissive Property Tax Exemption Policy [PDF - 36 KB] and the requirements in Section 224 of the Community Charter.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted by May 15 of the year before the taxation year the exemption applies to. To apply, follow these steps:

  1. Complete the application form
    Choose one of the following formats:
  2. Include supporting documents
    First-time applicants must provide:
    • A copy of the property’s Certificate of Title
    • Financial statements for the last three years
    • A budget for the current year and the next year
    • If the property is leased, also include a copy of the lease agreement and proof that last year's exemption reduced the lessee’s property tax share
