FAQs: Collection

Answers

  1. Why has Courtenay adopted the "Add-A-Day" collection schedule?

    1. Regional landfill holiday closures
The regional landfill operated by Comox Strathcona Waste Management is now closed on statutory holidays. This means there would be no place to deposit collected materials on holidays, and neither the City nor our contractor can store these materials overnight until the landfill reopens. For more information on the landfill please visit www.cswm.ca/hours

    2. New zones for our growing community
Courtenay added an additional collection zone in 2021. Spreading collection from four days to five days a week is intended to reduce delays and provide a more reliable and efficient service for current and future Courtenay residents. The new zones have taken into account our current population, as well as areas where we expect more growth in the future.
  2. How often does my collection day change?

Your collection will shift by one day after each weekday statutory holiday. In 2022 these holidays are:

    • Family Day, Monday, February 21
    • Good Friday, April 15
    • Victoria Day, Monday, May 23
    • Canada Day, Friday, July 1
    • BC Day, Monday, August 1
    • Labour Day, Monday, September 5
    • National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Friday, September 30
    • Thanksgiving, Monday, October 10
    • Remembrance Day, Friday, November 11
  3. Why does my Residential Waste Collection Guide only show one zone?

We wanted to make it easier for you to quickly find your collection days. Your printed guide shows the schedule for your specific collection zone. If you would like to view or print out a schedule for a different address, please visit www.courtenay.ca/recycling

  4. Can I get a reminder before my collection day?

Yes! Subscribe to alerts by text, email, or voice message with the Courtenay Collects mobile and web app. Visit www.courtenay.ca/recycling or find it in the App Store or on Google Play.

  5. When can I expect my new Residential Waste Collection Guide in the mail?

Guides are typically mailed in early December and will arrive in mailboxes by mid December.
