Property Tax Deferment
This tax assistance program offered by the Province of BC is a low-interest loan program designed to assist qualifying homeowners in British Columbia with paying the annual property taxes on their principal residence.
Please note: The City of Courtenay does not administer the Province of BC’s Tax Deferment Program. The Province of BC has created an online system for processing both new deferment applications and renewals. The City no longer accepts deferment applications.
The following programs are available:
- Regular Program for age 55 and over, surviving spouse of any age, or a person with disabilites
- Families with Children Program
Property taxes which qualify for deferment include the current year levy only, and must be net of the Provincial Home Owner Grant, and any utility charges (water, sewer and garbage user fees). All prior year property taxes, penalties, and interest charges must be cleared before you apply for tax deferment. Second residences, such as rental properties or summer cottages do not qualify for tax deferment.
Simple interest is charged on your deferment account and set by the Province every six months.
Visit the Province of BC website for additional information on deferring your property taxes, including current interest rates.
