Property tax deferment

The Province of British Columbia offers a low-interest loan program to eligible B.C. homeowners. The program allows you to defer your current year property taxes on your primary residence.

Note: The City of Courtenay does not manage the tax deferment program and does not accept applications. All applications and renewals are processed by the Province of B.C. The City no longer accepts deferment applications.

Eligibility

The Province of B.C. offers two programs:

  • Regular program: Available to homeowners who are 55 and over, a surviving spouse of any age, or a person with disabilities.
  • Families with children program: Available to eligible homeowners with children.

To learn more about the eligibility requirements of these programs, visit the Province of B.C.’s website.

What taxes can be deferred

Only the current year’s property taxes qualify for deferment. Taxes must be reduced by any provincial home owner grant and cannot include utility charges (such as water, sewer or garbage fees). You must pay all past-due taxes, penalties and interest before applying.

What properties qualify

Only primary residences qualify. You cannot defer taxes on rental properties, vacation homes or second residences.
