Oversize Load Approvals
If you are moving an oversized load on roads within the City boundary, you may need an Oversize Load Approval to do so.
An Oversize Load Approval is required when the vehicle and load have a combined:
- height of 4.15m and over OR,
- width of 2.6m and over OR,
- a single vehicle 12.5m long and over OR,
- two or more vehicles
- with 1 articulation point: 20m long and over OR,
- with more than 1 articulation point: 23m long and over
Please contact the Public Works Services Department a minimum of 10 working days prior to the transporation date to apply for an approval.
- Note: the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure administers several routes through the City and will require a separate approval process. Please refer to the Ministry of Transportation for more information.
- Note: Buildings or Structures being moved onto a property in the City from outside the City or from another property in the City; or moving a building or stucture within the property lines of a property in the City; or moving a building or stucture connected to services from inside the City to outside the City, require a Move Permit from the Building Division. Oversize Load Approvals are embedded within this permit and a separate permit is not required. Please refer to the Building Bylaw listed below or contact the Building Division for more information.
Permit Process
- Determine if the proposed route travels on ministry and/or municipal roads, using the Oversize Load Approval Application Route Map [PDF - 3 MB].
- Complete the Ministry of Transportations permiting process for routes that include Ministry roads.
- Determine which type of permit is required from the City. Refer to the Oversize Load Approval Application Route Map [PDF - 3 MB] and the Building Bylaw No. 2323, 2003 [PDF - 404 KB].
- a Move Permit is required from the City of Courtenay Building Division when: you propose to move a building or structure from a location outside the City onto a property that is inside the City
- a Move Permit is required when: you are proposing to move a building or structure from a property inside the City to a location outside the City
- a Move Permit is required when: you are proposing to move a building or structure from a property in the City to another property in the City
- a Move Permit is required when: you are proposing to move a building or structure within the existing property lines, and the property is in the City
- an Oversize Load Approval is required from the Public Works Services Department when you are proposing to move a building or structure through the City, from a location outside the City, to a location outside the City
- an Oversize Load Approval is required when you are proposing to move a load through the City, from a location outside the City, to a destination outside the City that is: over height, over width, or over length - that is NOT a building or structure, ie. a large piece of equipment
- an Oversize Load Approval is required when you are proposing to move a load to or from a destination in the City that is: over height, over width, or over length - that is NOT a building or structure, ie. a large piece of equipment
- Complete the Oversize Load Approval Application [PDF - 278 KB] and submit it by email to publicworks@courtenay.ca or in person to Public Works Services at 1000 Piercy Avenue, between the hours of 7:30 am and 4:00 pm, a minimum of 10 working days prior to the proposed transportation date. If a Move Permit is required, please contact the Building Division for the appropriate application form.
- Staff will complete a review of the application and may contact the applicant for more information, as required.
- Once the City has reviewed & approved the application, the applicant will recieve a copy of the Oversize Load Approval stating the conditions of the Approval.
