Oversize load moving

If you are moving an oversized load on roads within Courtenay, you may need an Oversize Load Approval.

An approval is required if the vehicle and load together exceed any of the following limits:

Height: 4.15 metres or more
Width: 2.6 metres or more
Length:
- Single vehicle: 12.5 metres or more
- Two or more vehicles:
  - With one articulation point: 20 metres or more
  - With more than one articulation point: 23 metres or more

How to apply

Check your route: Use the Oversize Load Approval application route map [PDF - 3 MB] to see if your route includes ministry or municipal roads.
Get ministry approval: If your route includes ministry roads, complete the Ministry of Transportation and Transit's permit process .
Determine the required City permit:
- If you are moving a building or structure, you may need a move permit.
- If you are moving an oversized load (not a building), you need an oversize load approval.
Submit your application:
- Complete the Oversize Load Approval application [PDF - 278 KB].
- Submit it by email to operations@courtenay.ca or in person at 1000 Piercy Avenue (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.).
- Apply at least 10 working days before your transportation date.
Application review: Staff will review your application and may request additional information.
Approval issuance: If approved, you will receive an Oversize Load Approval outlining the conditions.

If you are moving a building or structure within Courtenay, you may need a move permit instead of an oversize load approval. This includes:

Moving a building or structure from outside Courtenay to a property within Courtenay.
Moving a building or structure from one property to another within Courtenay.
Moving a building or structure from Courtenay to a location outside Courtenay.
Moving a building or structure within the same property boundaries.
